Mountain bike

On 10th December, Steve Drake will be riding the height of Everest to raise funds for our work supporting families across Bradford.

Steve was due to be taking part in a 24-hour mountain bike race this month, but COVID-19 and a bad fall from his bike earlier in the year put paid to that for the time being. Instead, to motivate himself to get back into training and keep up with his fitness, he’s set himself the goal of an 8,848 metre climb on his indoor bike (the height of Everest), to be cycled in one go.

The ride will be made up of hill repeats of a single climb, to be completed in a single ‘session’ on his indoor bike. There’s no time limit, but it’s expected to take 16 hours. Breaks are allowed (but not sleeping) – but they count towards the final time.

The indoor bike is equipped with gears and a gradient simulator – which must be set to 100% (maximum), so it will be very similar to the real thing. He might even open the window and get his family to spray him with water for authenticity!

The whole ride will be tracked and monitored, to make sure that he climbs the required amount.

You can support Steve (and hence us) online – all funds raised will help us to support families across Bradford who need our help.

(For the avoidance of doubt, the image is illustrative only and the ride will be taking place on an indoor cycle trainer!).
